Dr. Brian Spilker

Practice Owner and Veterinarian

Hello, my name is Dr. Brian Spilker.  I grew up on a farm near Beatrice, Nebraska where we always had several pets.  I graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Science in 1993 and received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University in 1997.  After graduating from veterinary school, I moved to the Lugoff area and worked in a local small animal veterinary clinic for eight years.  For the next three and one-half years, I performed emergency work at South Carolina Veterinary Emergency Care in Columbia, SC.  In December 2008, my dream of veterinary clinic ownership was accomplished when I became the new owner of Veterinary Medicine & Surgery.  I have been blessed with a wonderful, friendly, and well-trained staff who works well together in a family atmosphere. For the years 2012-2013 I was awarded as the Business Person of the Year by the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce. I look forward to providing excellent patient care for your pets.

My wife, Jennifer, moved to Camden, SC from Leavenworth, KS.  She was a professional hunter jumper horse trainer/rider.  We were introduced to one another by one of my employees at the time who rode horses with Jen.  We were married in April 2005 and have been blessed with two wonderful children.  Trenton was born June 2007 and Skylar was born May 2010.  We have several pets in our household: an Australian Terrier named Jackson, a black Labrador Retriever named Abby, a Jack Russell Terrier named Nike, and a Ragdoll cat named Milo.

Please stop by Veterinary Medicine & Surgery for a visit - we would love to give you a tour of our facility!!

Loraine Melero

Accounts Manager

Hello, my name is Loraine Melero. I am the accounts manager at VMS and have been working here since 2005 when I moved from Florida. My pet family consists of two cats, Rudy and Charlie, who I adopted from VMS ten years ago. VMS is a great place to work because Dr. Spilker  and all the support staff are very caring people and are like a second family to me.

Tara Fortner

Practice Manager

Hi! My name is Tara. I am glad to be a part of the great family we have here at Veterinary Medicine & Surgery. I love interacting with the pets we see here as well as their owners. I am married to Ronald and we have four children. We also have three pets, our dog Samantha and cats Abel and Logan. When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends and I love to read.

Lloyd Owens

Kennel Manager

I was born in the year 1872 upon the vessel Mary Celeste while on a voyage to Genoa. Oh, the seas were angry the day I entered this world. But not a fortnight after my birth all crew were forced to abandon the disheveled vessel due to a giant squid attack. We took refuge off the coast of Gibraltar were my family stayed for some time. Then at the tender age of 12 in the year 1884 a terrible plague overtook our small fishing village and my dear parents succumbed to disease and left me alone in this world. That was the day I had to become a man. So I took to the seas once again. I sailed the world for the next 23 years in search of a place I could call home. I took shelter in the Township of Camden, SC in 1907 and I have been here since. I live out my days caring for the animals at VMS. I also have two cats and bearded dragon.

Jennifer Spilker

Receptionist

Hi, my name is Jennifer Spilker.  I grew up in Leavenworth, KS, after living briefly in Alabama and Germany.  My family always had dogs and cats, and when I was six years old I began riding and showing horses, which quickly became my main passion in life.  I turned professional in 1994, and moved to Camden in 2001.  I married Dr. Brian Spilker in 2005, and we had our wonderful baby boy Trenton in 2007 and beautiful baby girl Skylar in 2010.  We have a Jack Russell ( Nike), a Labrador (Abby), an Australian Terrier (Jackson) and one cat (Milo).  I’ve been helping out as a receptionist, and really enjoy meeting all of the clients and their pets.

Bad Black Kitty

Bad Black Kitty came to us in December 2007.  He was attacked by a large dog and suffered severe injuries to his spinal cord.  After the incident, Bad Black Kitty was paralyzed in one hind leg and had partial use of his other hind leg. The nerves to his colon and bladder were also affected so he was unable to use his litter box.  The veterinarians later discovered that one of his ureters and a kidney had been damaged, so he had one kidney surgically removed. Now, after lots of TLC from the staff at Veterinary Medicine & Surgery, Bad Black Kitty has almost full function of both hind legs.  His bowel and bladder functions did not return, but he is quite a happy cat with lots of attention from the staff at Veterinary Medicine & Surgery.  Bad Black Kitty loves to greet clients and show off how well he can get around.  Come visit and see for yourself!!
